Gallery

This is a brag page, where I point at the creative folk who have used the patterns, designs, and project descriptions on my page to come up with their own work. It made my day to see each and every one of these projects. I’ve used individual blog posts for this before, but having a permanent location will be far more fun. Eventually this will include both stitched and knit pieces. All previous long-buried Gallery posts here on String will be scraped for content and that content will be ported here as well. Apologies if you sent me a photo that isn’t included – no editorial or other judgmental opinions are being expressed. Some photos have fallen off emails, links have died, or the address I have for you and wrote to for permission is no longer active.

All photos here have been provided by the people who created these works, and who retain their copyright on them. All photos appear here with their permission. If you want your work to be listed here, too, please email me. I’m kbsalazar on Gmail.

Stitching Patterns

Note that some of these are interpretations of my graphed patterns in knitting, crochet, or other media.

The Second Carolingian Modelbook, and the New Carolingian Modelbook

Elaine Cochrane – Purple Pride Sampler, 2024

Many, many bands out of T2CM, one from TNCM, the dinos from the Epic Fandom, a few bands from the stand-alone broadsides on my Patterns page, and a preview from a forthcoming work. Elaine sent me snapshots of this in progress, strip by strip. Loved every note. Bravo!

Mary-Anne Plousos, Adaptation of Corsica River Sampler, 2023

Mary-Anne started with XXX’s Corsica River and subbed two strips from T2CM into the composition – the one at the very bottom and the blackwork band, third from the top.

Alex Logsdon, Sampler 2022

More designs from T2CM, some cleverly abstracted rather than presented in the entire repeat.

Mary-Anne Plousos, Portuguese Book Sampler, Started in 2021

This one is still a work in progress. Mary-Anne is compiling her own version of Metropolitan Museum of Art’s holding 25.92 – pages from a stitched fabric book containing lots of patterns. She worked from transcriptions from several sources – her own among them, and included a couple of patterns I had charted from it for T2CM. Note that the museum’s attribution has changed since I visited that work. When I charted the strips it was credited as “Italian or Spanish, Early 17th century.” It’s now listed as “Probably Portuguese, Early 17th century.” I have included the update in the Errata section on my Books page.

Kimiko Small, Partlet, 2011

The widely known and lauded leader of the Historical Embroidery group on Facebook, also known under her SCA name of Dame Joan Silvertoppe, did this piece a while back. The stitched design from TNCM, and is a shoulder/bodice covering to be worn with a historical gown. She has a write-up of it here.

Caroline, Briar Rose Biscornu, 2010

The rose pattern is in TNCM, Caroline used it in its smallest dimension to do this charming biscornu shaped pincushion.

Kathryn Newell, Knit Sock, 2007

Long time friend Kathryn (Mistress Kathryn Goodwyn in the SCA) used a design from TNCM on a hand knit sock. The square unit graphs are useful for more than counted embroidery. You can knit from them, work tapestry or filet crochet, do darned laces on net or a woven ground (Lacis or Burrato), weave, or even do tile patterns using them.

Nancy, Stranded Pullover, 2005

Nancy, an old friend from Wild & Woolly a venerable yarn shop and knitters’ haunt (now long out of business), used the flower meander and dragonfly graphs in TNCM to magnificent effect, in a stranded sweater, even employing Fair Isle style colorwork gradients on the dragonflies.

Lady Lakshmi Amman, Cap, 2004

Lady Lakshmi of the SCA embroidered this cap for another SCA participant – Mistress Morewenna Westerne. I do not have permission to share their mundane (street) names. She abstracted the mermaid from TNCM and then adapted it to reflect Mistress Morwenna’s favorite pursuits. Around the edges are a stitching mermaid, a cooking mermaid, a performing mermaid, and others. Very clever!

Ensamplario Atlantio Volumes I and II

Wendy Davies, Sampler, 2023

The geometric linearity of the the fills used here really accent the modern layout.

Holly Dumont – Blackwork Hairclip, 2023

I’d not thought of this application! Very clever.

Eva – Bookbinding, 2022

This is the cover for a notebook, opened flat. The blue is the front and the yellow is the back. Designs from Ens Atl I and II, plus a delightful bit of improvisation along the spine and edging. Eva also found inspiration in the bookcover tutorial here on String.

Laura Phelps – Sampler, 2022

Striking and playful!

Anonymous, Panels for a Jewelry Box, 2022

You can see the corner marks for each panel side, the stitcher says that this piece was inspired by a blackworked jewel box embroidered by convalescent World War I soldiers, that was later presented to Queen Mary.

Sarah Paine, 2022 Stitch Along

Sarah, of Paine Free Crafts licensed several fills for the glass panels in her design house’s official 2022 Stitch Along. Quite a few people did it. I present her own finish.

Elaine Cochrane, Butterfly Sampler, 2020

A sweet original sampler, fills from EnsAtl volumes I and II. I find the praise of nature’s splendor rendered in blackwork to be a clever underscore of the statement included.

Elaine Cochrane, Two Projects, 2013

Obviously Elaine has been stalking me for a while. I love it.

Jordanna, Tiny Needlebook, 2013

Eentsy. And all the more delightful for it. The work flat, then made up into the double sided needle folder.

Epic Fandom Stitch Along

Victoria Mielke, Epic Fandom, 2022

Very creative use of fills and full coverage foreground motifs, in addition to voiding.

Mary-Anne Plousos, Epic Fandom, 2022

Mary-Anne is a skilled customizer, and made some lovely edits and emendations to Epic Fandom. All fine by me. I supply the clay – you get to sculpt it as you wish.

Callie, Epic Fandom, 2022

Callie was one of the long suffering beta-testers for Epic Fandom. I owe the whole beta team a major thank-you. Without their support I’d never have had the courage to release Epic.

Danielle, Epic Fandom 2022

Another intrepid Beta Tester!

Robert Himmelsbach, Collar and Cuffs set, 2021

An friend of the ages, Robert Himmelsback was kind enough to be one of the beta testers for a select preview of the Jurassic Jumble strip that became part of the Epic Fandom Stitch Along. Here are the cuffs from the collar and cuff set he did with it.

Broadsides and Other Freestanding Patterns

Robert Himmelsbach, Preliminary Study, 2020

My friend again, auditioning threads and ground counts for another collar and cuffs set, this one based on my dancing skeletons broadside. I believe he went with a different thread choice for the actual rendition.

Zelda Doyle, Flying Spaghetti Monster Bookmark, 2020

Possibly the silliest thing I ever charted. Possibly not. Done justice here by Zelda.

Knitting Patterns

There are lots of finishes posted on Ravelry by folks who have used my knitting patterns. Other than the posts there, very few have directly sent me photos of their finishes. Duplicating all the Ravelry photos here would take way too much real estate, plus too much time to contact and receive permissions, so I provide links to the already established repository. All of these patterns are available here on String, on the Knitting Patterns tab, except as noted below.

Kombu Scarf

Spring Lightning Scarf

Ultra Simple Blouse Scarf. No one has attempted this one yet. Not surprising since no one has worn these novelty yarn scarves since the death of the Great Novelty Yarn Craze.
